But from a marketing standpoint, the film provides something even more intriguing. Each youngster reacts differently to Wonka’s chocolate – not because of their age or background, but because of what drives them. And that’s exactly what psychographic segmentation is all about.

What is VALS?

VALS (Values and Lifestyles) is a widely used psychographic segmentation framework. Unlike demographic segmentation, which divides consumers into categories based on age, gender, or income, VALS focuses on deeper factors like as values, lifestyles, motives, and personality traits. In other words, VALS asks a different question. Instead of asking:

Who is the customer?

it asks:

Why does this customer buy?

The Eight VALS Consumer Segments

🔹 Innovators → seek originality, innovation, and premium experiences.

🔹 Thinkers → value knowledge, quality, and rational decisions.

🔹 Achievers → are driven by success, accomplishment, and recognition.

🔹 Experiencers → seek novelty, excitement, and new experiences.

🔹 Believers → prefer familiar brands, tradition, and stability.

🔹 Strivers → aspire to status and admire successful lifestyles.

🔹 Makers → prioritize practicality, functionality, and self-sufficiency.

🔹 Survivors → stay loyal to trusted brands and value security.

The Five Characters Through a Marketing Lens

Although Charlie and the Chocolate Factory wasn’t created to illustrate VALS, several characters display motivations that closely resemble different psychographic segments.

Charlie Bucket – Looking for Meaning

Charlie doesn’t obsess over winning. The product never changes. The motivations do.

Some customers buy for achievement.

Others buy for novelty.

Some buy for meaning.

Others simply want what nobody else has.

This is precisely why psychographic segmentation is so valuable. Understanding what motivates customers often provides deeper insights than simply knowing their age or income.

Beyond Demographics

Imagine trying to market Wonka chocolate using only demographic information. You might know:

age

gender

income

location

But none of these explain why Charlie and Veruca respond so differently to the exact same chocolate bar.

Psychographics fill that gap. They help marketers understand the values, aspirations, and motivations behind purchasing decisions.

Final Thoughts

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory isn’t simply a story about five children visiting a magical factory. It’s also a reminder that every customer sees the same product through a different lens. That’s the idea behind VALS. And that’s why great marketing begins the moment you realize not everyone sees the same product.

For the Brave Souls and Scholars

B.
